仁辉讲堂｜彼得·马克力：我的工作

杨廷宝先生，字仁辉，是我国著名建筑学家和建筑教育家，东南大学建筑学科创立的一代宗师。2021年杨廷宝先生诞辰120周年之际，为传承和光扬先生的学术精神，365英国上市集团开设“仁辉讲堂”，长期延请国内外著名学者、建筑师举办讲座，弘扬学术，激励后学，推动中国建筑和建筑教育事业的蓬勃发展。本期仁辉讲堂，由苏黎世联邦理工学院建筑与构造学讲席教授彼得·马克力( Peter M?rkli)主讲，采取线上线下同步直播的方式开展。

Professor Yang Tingbao, also known by his courtesy name as Renhui, was a renowned Chinese architect and architectural educator, who founded the architectural discipline at Southeast University. To honor his academic legacy, on the occasion of Prof. Yang Tingbao’s 120th anniversary in 2021, the School of Architecture at Southeast University launched the "Renhui Forum". This ongoing initiative invites leading scholars and architects from China and abroad to give lectures, advancing academic excellence, nurturing emerging talents, and promoting the development of architecture and architectural education in China.

The upcoming lecture will feature Peter M?rkli, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Architecture , ETH Zurich. The lecture will be held both at the venue and via livestream.

In this lecture, Professor Peter M?rkli will present a selection of his projects from 1980 to 2025, offering insights into his architectural practice and design thinking. Through a reflection on specific works, he will explain why the situations, the form of the buildings, and the spatial layouts are as they are, and what inspirations he has drawn from the visual arts.

彼得·马克力，国际著名建筑师、建筑教育家，1972年至1977年在瑞士苏黎世联邦理工学院（ETH Zurich）学习建筑学，在学期间结识建筑师鲁道夫·奥尔加蒂与雕塑家汉斯·约瑟夫松，并开始系统研究比例问题。1978年在苏黎世创立了自己的建筑事务所，长期通过立面绘图探索建筑语言与建筑表达之间的关系。曾任伦敦城市大学外部评审；2002年至2015年任教于瑞士苏黎世联邦理工学院建筑系，担任建筑设计教授；自2013年起任莫斯科MARCH建筑学院访问教授；2016年当选英国皇家建筑师学会国际院士。

Peter M?rkli, internationally renowned architect and architectural educator, studied architecture at ETH Zurich between 1972 and 1977. During this time, he became acquainted with the architect Rudolf Olgiati and the sculptor Hans Josephsohn, and began a systematic exploration of questions of proportion. In 1978 M?rkli started his own office in Zurich and has long explored the relationship between architectural language and architectural expression through fa?ade drawings. He also served as an External Examiner at London Metropolitan University. From 2002 to 2015, he was Professor of Architectural Design at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich. Since 2013, he has been a Visiting Professor at the MARCH School of Architecture. In 2016, he was elected an International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

His work includes a large number of residential buildings of different scales, such as the early houses completed in collaboration with Gody Kühnis (1979/1982), the multi-family housing project in Sargans (1986), the mixed-use apartment building with restaurant on Hohlstrasse in Zurich (2005), as well as La Congiunta, a building for the reliefs and sculptures by Hans Josephsohn, Giornico (1992), The new organ at the cathedral in Basel (2003), Im Birch school, Zurich (2006), Novartis visitor center, in Basel (2006), the headquarters building for Synthes, in Solothurn (2012), Belvoirpark Hotel and Restaurant management school, in Zurich (2014), Gutstrasse housing, in Zurich (2013), Masterplan Gutstrasse, in Zurich (2015-2017). These projects are primarily documented in two monographs Approximations: The Architecture of Peter M?rkli（London: Architecture Association Publications, 2002), Everything One Invents is True (Lucerne: Quart, 2017). M?rkli also participated in the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2012 and has exhibited his drawings in Basel, London, Copenhagen, Budweis, Somerset, Moscow and Tokyo. A selection of these works is published in Zeichnungen / Drawings Peter M?rkli (Lucerne: Quart , 2015)

“空”与“边界”是彼得·马克力在苏黎世联邦理工学院担任建筑与构造学教授期间教学中的核心主题。课程中的设计任务要求学生提出一种关于生活的理解，并使其在建筑结构中得到体现。在这一过程中，对“空”——即外部空间——的组织与表达，与立面的塑造以及内外之间界面的设计被认为具有同等重要的根本性意义。在2015年秋季马克力结束其教学工作之际，苏黎世联邦理工学院建筑系在由戈特弗里德·森佩尔设计的ETH主楼大厅举办了一场致敬展览。展览中呈现的约110件学生作品随后收录于配套出版物《彼得·马克力：苏黎世联邦理工学院建筑学教席（2002—2015）》（2016）中，在建筑设计教育领域产生了国际性影响。

“Emptiness” and “boundary” were central themes in Peter M?rkli’s teaching during his tenure as Professor of Architecture and Construction at ETH Zurich. Design assignments in his studio asked students to formulate an understanding of life and to give it spatial and structural expression through architecture. In this process, the articulation of “emptiness”—that is, exterior space—was regarded as fundamentally important, alongside the expression of the fa?ade and the design of the threshold between outside and inside. When M?rkli concluded his teaching activities in the autumn of 2015, the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich organized a tribute exhibition in the main hall of the ETH main building designed by Gottfried Semper. Around 110 student projects presented in the exhibition were subsequently documented in the accompanying publication M?rkli Professur für Architektur an der ETH Zürich 2002–2015 (Zurich: gta Verlag, 2016), exerting an international influence in the field of architectural design education.
